“Radha, why don’t you go to doctor? Please come to doctor” pleaded Ravi, Radha’s husband.
“Yes dear, I will get ready” saying these words when Radha woke up from bed she coughed again but now she coughed blood which shocked Ravi.
“Radha, what happened to you?” he ran near to support her as she fainted.
Radha was rushed to hospital. After all her examination was done she was now in special ward. Ravi was seated beside her. Just then he received call from doctor to visit her.
“Excuse me doctor” Ravi entered doctor’s room.
Ravalli gestured Ravi to take his seat.
“Mr. Ravi, all the tests for your wife indicate that she has lung cancer.”
“Doctor!! Ravi was shaken to hear that.
“Well Mr. Ravi, I have a question to you. Do you smoke regularly? Are you a chain smoker?”
“Yes doctor, Ravi replied reluctantly.”
“Ravi, you know how your wife had developed this lung cancer being a non-smoker? It’s because of your smoking habit.”
“But doctor, how will that cause lung cancer for her?” asked Ravi
“Yes Ravi, it’s your habit of smoking which has made your wife victim of lung cancer”
“Do you know that smoking is injurious to health? It’s written on the pack of cigarette and government continuously publicizes about the serious health and environmental issues because of smoking. But, people who smoke never bother for these instructions. It had been discovered that wives who did not smoke but were exposed to their husbands' cigarette smoke developed lung cancer at a much higher rate than nonsmoking wives of nonsmoking husbands, according to results of a major 14-year study in Japan.
The risk to nonsmoking wives was directly related to the amount their husbands smoked, and that risk was one-half to one-third that of direct smoking. The study also strengthens the thesis that the effect of tobacco smoke on the nonsmoker, which has been variously called passive, second-hand or involuntary smoking, may be a cause of lung cancer in the general population.
The study adds to a growing body of evidence implicating passive smoking as a health hazard. A study published last year suggested that passive smoking might cause damage to the small airways in the lungs of nonsmokers. Other studies have suggested that passive smoking may aggravate nonsmokers' pre-existing chronic heart and lung conditions.
The lungs are the leading site of cancer in American men who are 35 years old and older. In women, lung cancer deaths are rising so fast that experts expect them to exceed breast cancer deaths by the middle of this decade, becoming the number one cancer killer of women. As the epidemiological evidence linking the rise of lung cancer with cigarette smoking has mounted, many experts have theorized that passive smokers have a greater risk of developing lung cancer than those who are not exposed to smoke. Such theories are based on the knowledge that second-hand smokes of cigarettes contain large amounts of toxic substances, including carcinogens.”
Ravi was feeling guilty that his lifestyle had ruined his wife’s life.
Ravalli continued,
“Well, people who smoke say that they smoke to get calmed from tension and worries. Non-smokers do have worries and tension and if smoking cures tension, then everyone would end up smoking. The truth is smokers are not able to come out of the routine of smoking and because of that they get into invalid and worthless justification. Smokers not only put their life to risks but also risk lives of their dear ones!!”
“Now, at least quit your smoking habit, and take good care of your wife” said Ravalli.
Ravi came out with a strong resolution to quit smoking.
